There are few finer sights in football than Steve McManaman picking up the ball on the halfway line twistingand turning past four or five opponents and firing the ball into the corner of the net. The main element of his game he knows he could improve on is his goal-scoring. His mazy, half-pitch runs against Celtic and Aston Villa both ended with the ball in the back of the net where in previous seasons they'd have culminated in a limp shot into the keepers' arms. Rejected by a Liverpool boys team, as a youngster Steve McManaman was considered too pasty and lightweight to make it in the heavyweight world of top-flight football. But while his peers concentrated on their weight training, building themselves up for battle, McManaman stayed outside with the ball at his feet to develop into one of the most exciting players in the land. Steve McManaman made his debut in a red shirt at the tender age of 18. Over the last couple of seasons at Liverpool - playing in a free role as the principal playmaker - he's really fulfilled his awesome potential and maintained consistency, making him an endless source of transfer speculation. A few season's ago saw Steve move to Real Madrid on a free transfer where he has made a massive impression in his first season - helping Real lift the European Cup. Let's hope he contiues to have such a tremendous impact in future seasons.
